I've been gone for three days, but I drove to Witchita to get some answers for my radio friend as well as picking up some supplies for Sakanas, mostly medicine refills for the elderly back home. The three Federals in place there were pretty tight lipped, I was asking about military recruitment centers, housing for the homeless and prisons. They told me to go back home and understand that my journey there and back was illegal and that I could wind up in a prison. And then I asked, where would I be (more)

My radio popped to life today, a man from Wyoming was radioing. He was looking for directions. He told me he was a huge fan of the series I had done back in April of 2006 about state corruption in the Dakotas, he was a big fan of my insight into federal mining laws and the natural gas nightmares. He told me he had been able to find the remains of our blog and had been reading them (From MONTANA!). I told him I didn't believe him. He wouldn't say his name but that he would contact us again. Happy June!! Well we have been planting and expecting a visit any day from our new government representatives west of us in Cheyenne. No visits though, I guess we are too small to get notice from the region. The electricity has been shaky but we haven't had a few days in blackout since late April. Planes are more prevalent, their noise no longer gathers a crowd, instead we save it for the nightmarish thumping of a vast amount of helicopters that seem to patrol the lands north of here. The dog packs (more)

Last night a roar of plane engines at night filled the sunset and dropped hundreds of flyers on our town claiming that something called 'the Cheyenne Government' was under control and that we were under 'martial law.' I'll photograph it later today and post it so you can read it. Pretty spooky stuff. We've been up all night discussing the possibilities. The flag they're using is a variation of the USA one we grew up with and they claim they have a weekly broadcast on Mondays at 6PM.

Planting. Planting. Planting. I want to thank all the volunteers who gave their last two weeks to the all volunteer planting rotations of 2007. The riotous farm meeting on March 19th set the stage for an eventful and backbreaking planting rush, and we can assume the same goes for other communities with plenty of land to farm and little fuel to get it done with. Lucky we still have our own hard labor to rejuvenate the farmlands of Kansas.
Here in Sakanas we've just spent a whirlwind (more)

2AM. A green streak was observed in the sky yesterday heading low over the North crossroads on Darcher Road. It slammed into the Weyer property where it left a gaping hole and groundwater filled the breach. Andy Weyer was first to arrive and he reported a terrible stench and the ground was steaming without any sign of burning or carbonization. By dawn the Constable had arrived and cordoned off the (more)

Dogs Attack
Residents of Sakanas were awoken at dawn yesterday to find the Southeastern areas, mile 3 and the Tyrma Sled Run, up to the business district overrun by what appeared to be thousands of dogs. Some estimates by residents on the periphery placed the number at closer to ten thousand. Eyewitnesses, including this author, brought shovels and rifles and any light weapons that could be grabbed nearby in the early light and confronted the hoard. Some claimed there were wolves (more)

Stray chickens have been walking through town for the past few days. Rumor has it they're from the Midas ranch hatchery twenty miles east that hasn't been heard from in over eight months. A volunteer will be sent to inspect. Although it was 64 degrees today, I asked Tim if the chickens that might freeze (if the temperature were to drop) would be edible. He said just thaw them and drain them within a day and they'll be tasty.

Radios Dan Helmond, The Marksleys, and this reporter all have hi-range radios, and since the electricity has been on we've been monitoring the waves finding not much but a few military signals, some uninteligible chatter, one has a preacher spouting biblical sayings. One came from the outskirts of Lawrence and it sounds like humans suffering from radiation poisoning, sharing or gaining advice with a doctor far away enough to avoid contamination. Unsettling but a new (more)

Heavy Rains Bad for Storage, Slowing Down Productivity While the heavy rains of the past two weeks may be excellent for our next seasons crops, they are so severe as to make it difficult for farmers to work. Unhoused or unhouseable animals are massing near trees. Many older citizens too, have been essentially ‘rained in’ and have been unable to make it into town. If the (more)

UP AND RUNNING Here we are in Sakanas, Kansas approximately three weeks after our nearest cities were hit by atomic bombs. We survived without any power or electricity, during which time many of the farms in our vicinity lost cattle, horses, chickens, pigs, and cows to the chaos that's enveloped the region. We started working again as soon as we overcame the shock of what's happened here in the midwest. We knew the coming winter would be tough to (more)
